Las Vegas (often abbreviated as "Vegas") is the most populous city in the state of Nevada. The Las Vegas metropolitan area, includes the Las Vegas Valley a 600 square mile (1600 kmē) basin, and surrounding areas, that are part of Clark County in southern Nevada. The area contains the largest concentration of people in the state.

In 2005, the valley played host to 34.7 million visitors. Las Vegas is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. Between April 1990 and April 2000, the Las Vegas metropolitan area population increased by 83%, growing from 852,737 to 1,563,282. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2007)

The center of gambling in the United States and the world, Las Vegas is commonly known as The Entertainment Capital of the World; famous for its massive and lavish casino resorts, availability of alcoholic beverages at any time (as is true throughout Nevada), and various degrees of adult entertainment. It is also referred to as Sin City, but in recent years the city itself has stopped using this moniker in its marketing. The city's glamorous image has often made it a popular setting for films and television programs.

Popular nearby tourist attractions are Hoover Dam and Lake Mead (the largest man-made lake in the U.S.), Lake Mojave, the Mt. Charleston Recreation Area, Red Rock Canyon, and the Death Valley National Monument. The name Las Vegas is Spanish for The Meadows
